Bluedot Festival

OBJECTIVE

Bluedot Festival hosts music from global artists, in a creative and visual experience underneath the iconic Lovell Telescope. They required a transformation across several areas of the festival, which re-imagined their brand image of futuristic and technological advances. Bespoke installations provided interactive features and fully themed stage designs, each with a unique concept that blended innovation with a fun, vibrant character.

THE PROJECT

Canopies were designed to give a unique atmosphere and theme for each of five tent arenas. These included themes across futuristic space, a deep space disco, an electric nebula, a bohemian getaway and enchanted garden.

Our team was given full creative control for the ‘Into Orbit arena, including design for the big top tent ceiling and stage. The intergalactic stretch canopy created a fantasy of circuitry patterns and colours of the cosmos. The canopy was given an alternate dimension from the glow of carved alien artefact light boxes, neon lights and cascading fibre optic wires.

An entrance to the ‘Into Orbit’ area was developed with arches including circuitry and foliage let technology fuse with nature, creating a space-age environment. They were given an ethereal look with smoke effects rising from the upper side, as if powered by futuristic technology.

For the ‘Deep Space Disco’ stage, we developed a design that fused space-age installations with retro punk glam and 70’s pop art culture. A giant cassette tape DJ booth was framed with astronaut sculptures, neon light podiums, glowing Rubik’s cube light boxes and scenes from pop art history.

The pop art stretch canopy immersed the stage into maverick artwork of astronauts with boomboxes, cassette tapes in space, roller blades, disco balls and scenes from pop art comics. The theme expanded with illuminated planets suspended from the canopy, alongside neon light shapes, hot air balloons, acrylic cassette tapes and slinkies.

The ‘Nebula’ area became a fun arena packed with the energy of take-off. Geometric patterns across a colourful lycra canopy were given a cosmic character with glowing planets, electric bolts and reflective space fragments which floated through the nebula space.

The ‘Elevate’ area was designed with a bohemian vibe, including a carved walk-in bohemian structure, a walkway and decorative star seating. Elegant macrame tapestries decorated the area with a relaxed atmosphere.

Photo opportunities, archways and interactive installations were positioned at key locations, to provide festival goers with an immersive experience as they explored the interstellar Bluedot galaxy. Geometric archways with extra vibrant printed designs functioned as landmark signs, and additionally as photo opportunities. An additional photo opportunity let attendees capture Bluedot branded moments inside a split-head sculpture, with the iconic Lovell Telescope in the background.

THE RESULT

The festival wanted to create a space-age environment underneath the iconic Lovell Telescope, and the combination of unique stage and tent designs with interactive installations let festival goers become truly immersed into the brand’s story. Photos captured by attendees were shared widely across social media, showcasing the one-of-a-kind and innovative experience provided by the festival.
