OBJECTIVE

Kendal Calling is a figurehead festival of the UK summer, which hosts a selection of the biggest music acts from across the world. To date they had run multiple stages across their venue with large crowds, but which were in need of an experience and brand signature. The objective of our team was to create original concepts to transform nine areas and stages of the festival.

THE PROJECT

Each of nine areas were transformed from traditional stages to iconic themed experiences. Each design gave its respective area a unique character, from a retro disco circus to the shores of Miami.

Miami Stage:

A full stage and DJ booth facade which gives visions of sunset boulevards. Palm tree lined metropolitan buildings become electric with multi-coloured LED lights, inviting attendees into a beachside festival.

Jungle Stage:

The full interior of this tent was transformed into the deep jungle, with a full foliage canopy of rainforest leaves, vines and dramatic tropical flowers. Large inflatables added powerful accents of colour, which together covered a large-scale tent ceiling.

Alice Stage:

The Alice theme has been re-imagined once again, underneath a high-impact canopy of lycra patterns and hanging flowers, mushrooms, spirals, clocks, keys, playing cards and characters. A custom made stage clock was accompanied with visual projections of scenes from the Alice story and creative animations.

Tiki Area:

Bright tribal structures brought the soul of the jungle to Kendal Calling, with a Tiki area of colourful masks, totem poles and tribal deities. Bespoke patterns matched natural materials for both a fun and authentic experience.

Additional areas were transformed into a steampunk cinema, a lost eden and a travelling circus, alongside interactive installations throughout the grounds. Festival lettering,

THE RESULTS

The weekend ran as an outstanding success, as stages packed with attendees became experiences connected to the festival and music. Festival-goers explored each new environment, which enhanced the performance from the stage as a unified production. Attendees shared their experiences via multiple photo opportunities which were situated around the festival, and let Kendal Calling become one of the highlight events of the UK summer.

Electric Woodlands

OBJECTIVE

This iconic UK festival needed a full design transformation for the summer of 2022, including stage design, bespoke installations, canopies, lighting, archways and photo opportunities. The features were to combine and produce an immersive experience into a truly electric environment, as if a spark had landed in the fields.

THE PROJECT

The festival was illuminated in vivid colour and energy, from a comprehensive series of installations across the stage and festival grounds. A high impact Neo-Tokyo stage was developed from electric blue neon lights in an oriental style, matched with skyscraper light boxes and DJ booth infinity mirrors.

A separate stage was given a twilight forest setup which glowed from crystal embers and futuristic structures. Neon LED lights were suspended from a deep forest canopy, giving the leaves and vines a new colour dimension. Patterns carved into giant standing crystals gave off a spectrum of light to compliment the intense look of the stage.

A signature photo opportunity let attendees stand in between a larger-than-life split-head installation in the fields, fused together with a metal framework, coloured wires and festival branding. A feature which took on a new identity at night, it was illuminated in purples and blues for spectacular social media photos.

Throughout the festival grounds visitors could find mysterious pyramid structures with elaborate carvings. Each carved pattern produced a vivid light from custom integrated lighting.

THE RESULTS

The festival lit up with a surge of colour and energy, as the light from each stage blended with each illuminated installation across the grounds. Visitors shared photos and videos of each stage, alongside themselves in the signature split-head photo opportunity, to give the festival significant reach across all of the social networks.

Foreverland

OBJECTIVE

Foreverland is an established UK event tour with a large and dedicated fanbase, which has been built from the statement creativity of the brand. They wanted the Visual Architects team to design a new custom theme which combined elements of our Neon Jungle setup with a new and iconic brand look.

THE PROJECT

This production took the Neon Jungle theme out of orbit, as the perfect fusion of space age colours and contemporary art. The core elements of jungle foliage and neon light were invaded by spacemen, martians, asteroid rocks and classical statues, which gave Foreverland attendees a first class trip to the brand’s interstellar trademark. A ceiling installation of stretch lycra and suspended neon light brought the theme together into an immersive experience. Cosmic patterns and pink jungle ferns and palms printed across the lycra transformed the interior into the funky atmosphere of a highway space station, which included suspended birds of paradise and hyperspeed neon light shapes across the room.

RESULTS

The fusion of neon elements and classical art across the stage gave Foreverland a hyper-contemporary look. Integrated lighting within the stage decor produced the space-age atmosphere, delivering this high energy statement theme that was perfect for the young Foreverland audience.

Pollen Presents: The Vamps

OBJECTIVE

The renowned Pollen brand brought the world famous band ‘The Vamps’ to Barcelona, in a ‘Pollen Presents’ weekender. This outdoor and indoor event required a bright, original and glamorous image which would become the ultimate holiday experience. During its running time over both day and night, it was to look as iconic and dramatic as the main band at all times.

THE PROJECT

The theme crossed over between bright outdoor areas with a bar and pool, a main outdoor stage and two indoor stages. The design evolved throughout each area to develop an experience that resonated with the brand image.

Throughout the venue, the summery vibe of deluxe tropical foliage blended with our Sugar Rush installations created a getaway for attendees, drenched in hot pinks, purples and emerald greens. Bespoke photo opportunities were created for visitors to show off their holiday, with the Sugar Rush doughnut swing in a cascade of multi-coloured foliage and a deluxe foliage wall with branded signage, disco balls and neon lights.

The outdoor and indoor stages each let visitors experience a different aspect of the core theme. An indoor stage of urban electricity created a high energy atmosphere, as vivid neon signs and shapes lit up the canopy of hanging floral vines. Cherry blossom trees draped the stage in pinks, blues and whites, as neon signs, butterflies and branding immersed the audience into the experience. The outdoor stage was dressed in a pink foliage paradise, brought to life with giant inflatable flowers on the higher frame of the stage. Bespoke branded signage was displayed across the rear of the stage, contrasted by a light box suspended over the front.

THE RESULT

The delivery of a consistent theme across multiple areas created immersion into the event and the brand lifestyle. Photos and social media stories were shared widely by visitors, who used the branded photo opportunities throughout the event. A unique summer identity was created which the visitors could experience, and which fused with their lifestyle.

Vice Liverpool

OBJECTIVE

The Vice bar/club in Liverpool required a complete interior design, integrating LED lighting technology into the premises for a futuristic urban environment. Taking key elements from movies and contemporary style, it needed to be a fully immersive and original experience, which would let its core customer audience live their real lifestyle. This permanent installation would be the signature of the brand.

THE PROJECT

The design visualised a new brand of urban electricity, designed, developed and installed by our team as a permanent transformation. Hot neon accents contrast the deep urban atmosphere, through LED light fixtures to the ceiling, walls and bar, bringing together inner city style with the futuristic ‘vice’ character. Vivid slogans in LED neon are featured across the walls and mirrored surfaces to give a statement character, which also become photo opportunities for visitors to share on social media. The main photo backdrops of the premises lets attendees pose on iconic vehicles, illuminated in hot pink, purple and electric blue. Bar branding behind each feature vehicle ensures that all photos will showcase the brand name.

THE RESULT

The new bar opened with its signature look, drawing customers in who want to become part of a futuristic urban experience. Images of visitors enjoying the electric atmosphere were shared to new audiences, giving one of the strongest reviews of the establishment. The bar has stood out as one of the key movers in the hospitality industry.

Shooshh Brighton

event decor

OBJECTIVE

This hub of Brighton day and nightlife, Shooshh, needed an iconic new look for its interior, with a custom DJ booth and branding. The installation needed to be permanent, unique and utilising the latest lighting technology in an innovative way. The design needed to represent the brand identity with a fresh interpretation that would amaze their customers and present them as one of the style-forward centres in the city.

THE PROJECT

Full 3D renders were created to visualise the DJ booth design prior to construction, with realistic lighting effects and colours. The DJ booth itself was constructed exclusively out of LED infinity mirrors, shaped in a bespoke geometric style that would give Shoosh an unparalleled signature. The depth of the infinity mirrors was mirrored by a ceiling installation of disco balls, with a fun vibe that added deeper colours to the area. Light from a branded Shooshh backdrop was also given extra dimension by the disco ball installation, which evolved across the ceiling. The entire look was brought together by a backdrop of neon light strips running down the walls, in a variety of colours complimentary to the overall theme.

THE RESULT

The new installation developed the character of the brand and brought out the iconic personality of Shooshh. The transformation of this setting had a large impact on its customers, from its regular attendees to new visitors, who both have not seen this bespoke geometric design previously in a venue. The new visual trademark gave the establishment a fresh identity and buzz for the start of 2022, staying ahead of its competitors in the city.

Pergola Paddington

christmas decorators

OBJECTIVE

The iconic interior of this famous restaurant close to Paddington Station in London needed a look that was truly dusted in magic for their ‘Deck The Halls’ experience. Pergola was to become a winter dining sensation, which would light up the darker evenings and give guests a place to escape from the cold. The premises needed to be unique and memorable enough to stand out from the multitude of Christmas decor across London.

THE PROJECT

Each element of the restaurant pillars, ceiling, archways and outdoor spaces were brought into a consistent theme which evolved through the premises. A high level of detail throughout the design developed realism into the theme and provided a high-end finish. The ceiling structure was interwoven with evergreen foliage, Christmas trinkets and soft red draping. The mix of textures and colours developed the cosy atmosphere of an alpine getaway with a festive setting, given sheer radiance with integrated lights, silver stars, golden light boxes, snowflakes, silver bells, red berries. Playing cards, postcards to Santa and ornaments were also suspended from the canopy, to give a unique character to the display. A life-size Santa’s sleigh offered an ideal opportunity for visitor photos, as they gathered in and next to the sleigh, and escorted by dashing golden reindeer with a metallic finish. A ‘Deck The Halls’ signage board was constructed as a backdrop to the sleigh and illuminated with fairy lights, letting the brand name feature in every visitor shot. Framed by larger-than-life candy canes and evergreen trees, it created a truly enchanted area.

THE RESULT

Diners could relax in and enjoy a truly festive atmosphere, which had all the magic of a true winter wonderland. The decor blended perfectly with the music and entertainment provided by Pergola, to bring to life the ‘Deck The Halls’ trademark. Visitors took frosted snaps within the iconic photo opportunities of Santa’s sleigh, the Nutcracker Suite and under glittering Christmas foliage, promoting the Pergola brand name across social media.

Scarecity 2.0

OBJECTIVE

After the sold-out shows of the pilot ‘Scare City’ drive-in cinema in 2020 by Park N Party, the second edition in 2021 needed to bring back the mayhem with an experience that would surpass the first adventure. This chapter needed to give attendees a new journey through their favourite Halloween movies with drive-through installations, performers, characters and all-encompassing atmosphere.

THE PROJECT

Our team of experienced planners mapped out the cinema complex, from entry points to the far-reaching carpark and cinema screen. Advanced laser mapping technology drew up precise maps for our designers to work with, and to lay down each area of installations, props, signs, lighting, performance areas and the notorious entryway tunnel. We worked with Park N Party to bring to life a vision that expanded the theme from the previous year, adapting the plans throughout the design process to include each new idea.

Abandoned cars, broken subway trains and a deranged Winnebago created scenes of a full scale to be believed in, alongside iconic installations from the films on show, including the unforgettable ‘Route 66’ garage. Every corner was detailed with props, eerie artwork and sculptures of lost souls, snake heads, candles and skeletons surrounded by dry brambles.

The performers truly brought the experience to un-life, who sauntered through vehicles and interacted directly with each visitor, whether they were inside their vehicle or dared to venture out. The cinema screen was surrounded with sinister decor and foliage with integrated lighting, to offer a frightening experience that guests could not get enough of.

Performers became frightening shadows of their former selves, as they were transformed into zombies, werewolves, vampires and denizens of the undead. Costumes crafted by expert designers gave an eerily realistic character to every performer, to let attendees wonder if they were truly in a Halloween movie. Parked vehicles became in danger of being haunted by the lost souls that wandered throughout the cinema complex, with even bigger jump scares for those brave enough to exit their car.

RESULTS

The concept took the more industrial version of the previous Scare City into an eerie and dark woodland environment, developing the isolated atmosphere found in many Halloween movies. The new props and atmosphere let attendees become immersed in an entirely new story of their own this year. The 2021 Scare City came back in its most devious form yet, letting hordes of visitors drive through the creepiest complex of installations straight from their favourite scary movies.

IllumiNaughty

Event decor

OBJECTIVE

IllumiNaughty, our sister company, is an event that aims to push the creative boundaries of experience, immersion and music, to create an interactive show that develops with each edition. Hosting indoor festivals of 2,000 – 5,000 capacity, and stages at renowned festivals such as Boomtown Fair. Free Earth Festival and One Tribe Festival, this event requires unique and immersive experiences for each and every setup, all of which are distinct but follow from the previous chapter with the same atmosphere and vibe that the audience associates with the brand.

THE PROJECT

For every show we create a fully immersive stage and set design, which includes bespoke installations, decor, artwork and props to create a truly stunning visual display. A unique concept is created in-line with the event’s story, which is mapped throughout the night with choreographed performances of acrobatic skills and story characters. The planning for these events begins months in advance, to design all 3D renders, sketches and performances, and to fabricate the set installations.

We project manage all events, which includes booking management and liaison of all artists, DJs, performers and other acts. Full event marketing is run by our team, and on the night we co-ordinate on-site event production and stage management. Special effects and interactive installations are also included to transform the party into another world. At present, this event holds 2,000 attendees in the theatrical Troxy venue in London, and is a show which requires every aspect of production to be managed by our team.

Previous themes have included Gatsby, Tokyo Rising, Electric Dreams, Day of the Dead, Alice in Wonderland and many more, pushing the limits of the immersive event experience. Our team designs a full new theme for each event, with choreographed performance that brings to life the story and character of the party. Combining visuals, decor, set design, performers, characters and lighting, we take the experience from concept to an unforgettable event.

THE RESULT

IllumiNaughty has grown from the underground clubbing scene in Manchester to an  international brand which has featured in mainstream nightlife magazines as one of the highlight clubbing experiences in the UK. It has been a part of the ‘Psy Forest’ stage at Boomtown Fair since 2015, hosting the stage with a trance lineup of iconic names from around the world. The immersive visuals and engaging performances have defined the event within the UK nightlife scene, with sold-out shows as a result.

WHAT WE DID

Shamanic Tales – Astrix & FM Booking

OBJECTIVE

Our team designed this fully custom stage for the unique ‘Shamanic Tales’ theme, as the next edition of decor for our sister event ‘IllumiNaughty’ at Troxy in London. We needed to develop a strongly visual stage that would hold the attention of an audience throughout the night, and become a setting for which the Shamanic Tales story would evolve and come to life, backing some of the biggest DJ names in trance, including Astrix, Juno Reactor, Out of Orbit and Static Movement.

THE PROJECT

A stage concept designed between Visual Architects and Global Illumination, two main tree structures were developed to enhance the scale of the stage with dynamic 3D mapping, and work with the grade-2 listed features of the building. The high ceiling of Troxy enabled a high-reaching lycra design from the tree structures, connected to a lycra canopy of strong neon colours. Hanging elements from the canopy created immersion into a neon jungle theme, with acrylic leaves, dragonfly wings and tribal shapes, alongside suspended neon lights. Two giant inflatable spheres framed each side of the stage, which brought to life incredible scenes of light with 3D mapping effects. A projection above each DJ showcased complex and vivid visual patterns to bring the stage design together, and exhibit each DJ name. Performers created an electric atmosphere with aerial silk acts, aerial hoop, fire and a unique suspended aerial dancer. Performances ran frequently throughout the event, to tell the story of the Shamanic Tales and give the audience incredible displays to thrill them over the night.

An entrance walkway was installed within the venue, to provide the ultimate transition into the Shamanic Tales experience, as visitors explored overgrown faux foliage and vines shaped with green and yellow neon light. Meet and greet performers entertained the attendees on entry, and exhibited tribal costumes of feathers, gemstones and decorated hair.

THE RESULTS

The theme took over the stage at this sold out event. The visuals mapped across the trees, DJ booth and backing screen fused together in a display that drove the energy of the crowd, which was captured in the official photos and aftermovies. The reception and reviews after the event highlighted how powerfully the visuals and sonics combined over the night, with the majority of attendees purchasing tickets for the next event, even during Shamanic Tales. The colourful and dramatic stage, performers and entrance walkway were given wide social media reach by fans sharing their memories from the night.
